George Augustus Sala was a journalist, travel writer, and essayist, and had worked as a painter and illustrator before turning to journalism. He was the London Daily telegraph correspondent during the American Civil War and was a contributor to Dickens' Household words. From the description of George Augustus Sala papers, 1892.
